The Medical Certificate for Your Czech Driving License: A Simple Guide for Expats

Living in Prague often means navigating bureaucracy, and obtaining or renewing a driving license is no exception. Whether you are exchanging your foreign license for a Czech one, applying for the first time, or are a senior driver, you will likely encounter the request for a "Posudek o zdravotní způsobilosti" (Medical Fitness Certificate)

At Swiss Medical Services in Prague 1, we turn this administrative hurdle into a quick, stress-free 20-minute visit. Here is everything you need to know about getting your medical check for driving in the Czech Republic.

Do You Need a Medical Certificate?

In the Czech Republic, a medical assessment is mandatory in three specific situations. If you fall into one of these categories, you cannot process your license without a doctor’s stamp:

  1. New Applicants & License Exchanges: If you are applying for a Czech driving license for the first time or exchanging a non-EU license, the authorities require proof that you are physically fit to drive.

  2. Seniors (Age 65+): This is the most common reason our patients visit us. Czech law requires all drivers to undergo a medical check six months before their 65th birthday, then at age 68, and every two years thereafter.

  3. Professional Drivers: If you drive for work (truck drivers, taxi services, or logistics), you are subject to stricter "Group 2" medical checks, including regular neurological and visual assessments.

What Happens During the Check-Up?

Many expats fear this exam will be a complex interrogation. At our clinic, it is a straightforward preventative check. Our English-speaking GP will assess:

  • Vision: A standard eye chart test (bring your glasses or contact lenses!).

  • Hearing & Balance: Basic auditory checks.

  • Blood Pressure & Heart Health: Ensuring you are not at risk of sudden incapacity behind the wheel.

  • Medical History: A brief discussion about any chronic conditions (like diabetes or epilepsy) that might affect driving safety.

Note: You do not need to bring the blank Czech form with you. We have the official "Posudek" forms ready in our office and will help you fill them out correctly.

Why Do This at a Private Clinic?

You could visit a public hospital for this, but the experience is often frustrating for non-Czech speakers.

  • Speed: We usually complete the exam and issue the stamped certificate in under 30 minutes.

  • Language: The driving authority (Magistrát) is strict about paperwork. We ensure your form is filled out in flawless Czech so you don't get turned away at the counter, while explaining everything to you in English.

  • Location: We are located in Vodičkova 1935/38, just minutes from the central municipal offices where you will submit your application.

Validity of the Certificate

Once we stamp your medical certificate, it is valid for 30 days. You must submit it to the driver's registry office within this window, or you will need to repeat the check-up.

Don't let paperwork keep you off the road. Get your medical certificate sorted on your lunch break.
